I wrote a post last year all about a few tips and tricks for staying healthy through cold and flu season and LOVED writing it! This year I wanted to write one specifically about what we’re doing to PREVENT illness and stress, long before the holidays arrive. Last year we were under so much stress through the holidays and I know thats why we ended up sick. This year we are putting our health first and are determined to stay healthy and calm this fall and winter! Here are a few of the things we’re doing now and stocking up on NOW so we aren’t without any of the essentials we may need when the hustle of the season begins.
On Guard Products!
On Guard is a blend of essential oils that has been used for centuries to prevent the nastiest of diseases and plagues. There are a few different versions of this story but each one has this blend of essential oils in common. During a period of plague somewhere between the 15th-17th century, the spice trade was shut down in order to prevent spread of the diseases. These spice traders were out of jobs and resorted to robbing the bodies of the plagued victims. No-one else would touch the victims but these men had a special blend of spices that they distilled into oil to protect them from getting sick. We can harness this exact same power in On Guard essential oil! How amazing is that? This blend kept people from catching a plague, so I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say it’s VERY effective during cold/flu season! We stock up on the On Guard oil, the cleaner concentrate, the hand soap, and the capsules! doTERRA has a large range of products containing this amazing blend from hand sanitizer to laundry detergent, cough drops, and so much more! If you’re interested in stocking up at wholesale prices, let me know! I would love to help you get set up. If you’re ready to go, you can follow this link for instructions on how to order!
Eat More Veggies Than Usual. STOCK UP!
This one is huge. Our bodies need the vitamins and minerals that fresh organic veggies have to offer right now more than ever! Now is the time for big yummy salads full of leafy greens, roasted veggie dishes, and juices! We love roasting broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, butternut squash, bell peppers, etc. There are so many yummy things to enjoy this time of year! If you’re looking for an affordable way to stock up on fruits and veggies for your family, check out your local farmers market. Usually a local farmer’s produce will be much closer to (if not completely) organic than the grocery store and so much more affordable than store-bought brands.
Exercise is such an important part of staying healthy. As the weather gets cooler we are tempted to stay inside, layer up, and drink hot chocolate, but that isn’t necessarily going to help boost your immune system! So much of fall and winter is already spent inside so getting up and getting our blood circulating and our heart working is vital to staying well. While you may not want to spend too much time out in the cold, there are plenty of indoor options such as yoga, workouts on video, running on the treadmill, etc. Or if you are one of those people who do best when you’re exercising outside, then go for it! Just be aware of the temperature and always bundle up appropriately!
During the summer, we don’t feel the need to supplement as much but during the fall and winter there are a few things we keep on hand and make sure we’re taking every single day to boost our immune system! Everyday we take a whole food multivitamin, a probiotic, b-12, vitamin D, barley grass juice powder (to add into smoothies!), and On Guard capsules. We aren’t messing around! If we have been around sick friends or family we will boost this routine by adding in time-released vitamin C, quercetin, echinacea, zinc, and will be very diligent with using our essential oils. I’m linking all of our favorite supplements and brands towards the end of the post! We’ve found that the most affordable place to get supplements is usually amazon! The probiotics and On Guard capsules are from doTERRA! If you would like some, leave me a comment and I’ll tell you how to get your hands on them ASAP!
Making & Setting Holiday Plans NOW!
The holidays are no time to leave things up in and the air and not know what you’re doing and where you're going. Ever since we got married, navigating the holidays between two families has been an adventure to say the least! Last year was very stressful for us because there really was no plan. This year we are setting plans and sticking to them which will help us better prepare for the holidays and stay sane and relaxed and able to actually ENJOY the season, which is important! This year we are proposing that we do way less gifting and just spend more time experiencing life together. As we get older we’ve realized how little we need and how much we hate an accumulation of useless things in our home. I love the idea of going in together as a family and donating to a cause that’s important to you, this will help everyone save money in the long run which in turn lessens the tension and stress that some may feel over the holiday season.
Daily Glass of Grape Juice!
I know this one might sound super weird but it’s something that I actually just added back to my routine and I’m so happy I did. Drinking 100% grape juice has shown the ability to fight off the stomach flu in many families. Is there a ton of science backing it? No. But there are a ton of testimonies backing it and sometimes to me, that’s worth more than science. There’s also this awesome verse where Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 5:23 “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” Studies have shown that often throughout the bible and especially in this specific time frame, the word wine is used interchangeably between actual fermented wine and plain unfermented grape juice. This of course leads us to believe that the juice of a grape does indeed have medicinal and healing properties when it comes to stomach issues. As for me, sometimes history is all the proof I need to give something a try! The grape juice is able to change the PH in your digestive track/stomach which prevents the virus from multiplying and can in turn completely eliminate any & all symptoms or significantly decrease them. Some of this information was pulled from this blog post.
Enough said, drink your grape juice!!
Relieving stress and staying calm is such an important part of staying healthy and enjoying the holidays. For more info on how I stay calm and decrease anxiety be sure to check out both of these posts on how to unwind & dealing with anxiety.
