So when you first think about sitting down with a bunch of magazines to find things that are relevant to you and your goals, cutting them out, and gluing them to a poster board, it might seem a little silly and maybe even a bit childish. I kindof thought so too but I just kept hearing “put your goals down on paper”, “get them infront of you where you can see them everyday”, “what you focus on is what you will manifest.”, etc. I listen to a ton of podcasts, read books, and watch videos on goal setting, habit forming, and all things motivational and this is one thing that I hear over and over again. We need to be putting our goals and aspirations for our lives where we can see them daily and we need to be writing them out daily as well. Our minds are SO powerful and what we are constantly looking at, writing out, and feeding our brain daily MATTERS and will start to show up in all areas of our life.
Since making my vision board I have felt like I have less clutter in my head and a clearer vision for my future. I finally have all of my goals down on a poster board sitting on my desk where I can see it and reference it daily. It keeps me focused and on track with what I need to be doing to get to these places that I want to be. I have goals as small as “I want to meditate every day” or “I want to wake up earlier”, to BIG goals like “I want my business to produce enough passive income that we can pack up and go on vacation whenever we want to" & “I want to grow my essential oil business to where it’s making 6 figures.” Do I have any idea how to get there as of right now? Ha, no! But now my brain knows where we’re headed and it will start to find ways to get there instead of me always just saying things to myself like “this is what I want.” “I wish I could do this.” and not really having a plan or an end goal. I’ve been listening to a TON of Rachel Hollis’s RISE podcast lately and it’s been LIFE.CHANGING. Girl, if you’re reading this right now and have like 2 seconds to spare, open up your podcast app and subscribe to her podcast and start listening to them while you’re in the car, walking, cleaning the house, etc. If you want to learn how to dream bigger and if you are wanting to be your own boss you need this lady in your life. I promise everything you hear will be worth it! Anywho… back to vision boards. Ha!
Keep your goals infront of you, all of your goals that you would like to see happen over the next 3-5 years, get them infront of you! Something that Rachel talks about all the time on her podcast is the fact that we need to starting voicing our goals to ourselves like they are already happening “I’m writing an e-book.” “I’m opening my own business.”, “I’m going on vacation” INSTEAD of “I want to write an ebook or I wish I could write an ebook”, “I want to eventually open my own business”, “I wish I had the money to go on vacation.” She explained that if we just start to write our goals down and tell ourselves that these things are already happening, that these things are something we’re DOING and not something we just WANT to do, our brains will catch up and figure out a way to get us where we need to be and we will slowly start to see a shifting of gears in our minds pointing us to the next step and in the right direction toward those goals. THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN with a negative mindset or by beating yourself up or by sitting back and not putting in the hustle and the work. Our minds are powerful powerful tools and we need to learn how to program them to be productive and positive and not counterproductive and negative.
So why exactly did I make a vision board? I believe there are 3 main reasons that this is such a powerful tool for anyone and everyone:
1. A VISION BOARD OFFERS A DAILY REMINDER OF WHERE YOU’RE GOING
Everyday when I sit down at my desk I have everything cleared off except for my daily to do list, a notebook, water, laptop, and my vision board propped up against the wall. Everyday it’s one of the first things I look at when I’m getting into work mode. It’s a reminder of all the reasons that I’m sitting down, opening up my laptop, and getting back to the hustle. It reminds me of all the reasons I love what I do and the reasons why I want this to be my full time job, it’s a daily visual reminder of all the things that set my soul on fire. We all need that. It’s different than a list, it’s different than a pinterest board. There is power in cutting out, printing off, and sticking your goals, your dreams, your plans on a board ALTOGETHER where your brain can process how important they all are to you. It’s powerful and it’s worth it.
2. A VISION BOARD HELPS ELIMINATE DISTRACTION
When I have a constant reminder of why I’m doing what I do and where I’m going and all of my goals altogether in one place, all I have to say to myself when I get distracted with my phone or the internet is “each irrelevant distraction holds me back from reaching these things.” One glance at my board and it snaps be back to a place where I’m ready to focus in again and hit the ground running. It’s been a total game changer for me lately.
3. A VISION BOARD IS A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF WHAT WE’RE MANIFESTING IN OUR MINDS
It all comes back to the law of attraction! Read my blog post all about that here! As hippy dippy as it might sound to some people, the law of attraction, manifesting, all goes WAY back and really just means that what we are focusing on and thinking on is what we’re going to see, what we’re going to produce. Our BIGGEST obstacle is ourselves, our minds, and our attitude. If we can shift our attitude into one that is positive and we can activate this idea of thinking on, praying about, and meditating on what we want and what we see for our future, it will start to be. Just like it says in Proverbs 23:7 which says "as a man thinks, so is he." It’s so simple. Negativity can become a habit and it’s one we have to break if we ever want to see our dreams and goals manifest into something other than JUST dreams and goals. Creating a vision board is an easy, free (other than the foam board), and tangible way to GET YOUR GOALS INFRONT OF YOU. I don’t know how I used to function without having a vision board to reference back to but I know that my goals and dreams were all just floating around in my head and weren’t something that I was daily and actively working towards but now that they are the first things I see in the morning, I can’t ignore them, I know what they are, and I’m so much more motivated.
So grab some old magazines, a foam board, scissors and tape and get started! Cut things out or print things off that resonate with you. What do you want to see in your future? What are some of your favorite quotes or bible verses? Add some short term goals and some long term goals, add some small goals and some huge ones! Some examples of what I added to mine:
I want to be a stay at home mom and continue to work from home so I printed out a photo of a mother and daughter baking in the kitchen together and wrote “stay @ home mom” next to the photo.
I want to write a recipe e-book so I found a photo in a magazine of a delicious açaí bowl and stuck it to the board adding “write an e-book” next to it.
Get creative with it!! Another one of mine was this shirt that I’ve seen circulating on Pinterest for years and it says “permanent vacationer”. The first time I saw that shirt it set something off inside me that said “I want my business to be so stable that we can be permanent vacationers.” Not that we would ever truly be ALWAYS vacationing because we love our work, but a picture of that would look like being financially stable enough to pack up and getaway whenever we needed to.
Nothing is too small or too big, if you want it, add it.
Add quotes and photos too to fill in space! Anything that INSPIRES, MOTIVATES, or SETS YOUR SOUL ON FIRE, add it!
Want to do this with someone? Grab a friend, your sister, your mom, or make your board while you watch tv with your husband! Either way, just do it!! My sister and I made our boards together over the span of two days working on them off and on and it was such a life giving experience to share with her!
After you create your vision board make sure it’s in a place where you will see it daily!! And we are humans. We grow and we change so don’t be afraid to add or change anything on your board! This is your life and there are no rules to what you can and can’t add. Please let me know if you do this and tag me on instagram so I can see you creating your board!!
