The title of this post says it all. We put our house on airbnb and it's been a crazy ride ever since. The original plan was to do this so Chandler (my husband) could stop working a nine to five job, get his home builders license (which he did!!), and start up his home building company by building our next home! It's funny how our plan and God's plan can be along the same lines but have very different outcomes and a few bumps along the way that we often don't plan for. So long story short, we had a few finance goals by putting our home on airbnb and we have exceeded those for now (huge blessing) so we are wrapping up renting out our home and slowly transitioning back into it. We have missed it so much and will be back and forth in-between renters until they are done this fall. Fall is our favorite time of year together and we can't wait to get back home and decorate, make yummy fall food, and hangout with the windows open in the afternoons.
So as far as airbnb itself goes. We have loved airbnb and it has been a pretty seamless process for us. We have been blessed with amazing and respectful guests who love and care for our home and we have loved getting to share our little happy place with people from all over the country. It's been really fun! I fell in love with the hospitable side of having a rental property and going out of my way to make it feel like a nice hotel for our guests. We left fun little wifi password cards in the rooms, salt lamps, hanging plants, bath bombs, yummy coffee, a welcome letter board with the guests names, a beautifully designed booklet with all of our favorite local spots and beaches, etc. I am all about making a space feel as relaxing and cozy as possible and this adventure has instilled a new dream in both of us to have another airbnb that we can continually run all year long. Something really awesome about this rental company is that it's actually set up in a way where not only the guests get to rate the host and the home but the host actually get's to rate the guest as well! This is super helpful when deciding whether or not to accept bookings because you can always see what other hosts had to say about the person requesting. Airbnb also takes a very small fee compared to other rental programs like VRBO. It seems that the people that use airbnb are just all around a more respectful group of people looking for something a little bit different than your average vacation home rental. Decorating the home was so much fun for me and I can't wait to (hopefully soon) get my hands on another house to design and decorate.
While owning an airbnb, decorating, and hosting has been blast, not living at home has been extremely hard for us. We were running on the adrenaline of all the money we were going to save for a good few weeks but when the reality of what we're doing hit us, it hit us hard. We started out living in the upstairs of Chandler's parents home. We are so thankful to them to allow us to do this and will always be grateful for the help they gave us! We did a little remodeling to make it more of a little apartment space, and did OK there for a few weeks. We made it for a month and a half but not having my own space to cook, relax, etc. got to be really difficult for me and caused a lot of anxiety. I haven't had severe anxiety in years, my last bout of it was actually in high school. In some ways I'm thankful for that happening because I have learned ways to more effectively deal with my anxiety than ever before and I'll be writing a post all about that next! We ran into some pet allergy issues and for that reason on top of the anxiety, we were not able to continue living in his parents house but we took this as a nudge from the Lord that it was time to go back home. So in between renters we will be back at home until they are through, but in the mean time we are hopping back and forth from my parent's house and our home. Crazy, I know!
This has for sure been the craziest thing we've done so far but we got exactly what we wanted to out of it for now and even though our plan didn't quite line up with God's plan, we know we are in His will and we're trusting Him with the next steps. Through this we have learned that living with your parents shouldn't be something you willingly decide to do and that there is truly nothing better than being home and alone with your spouse. Our home is our ultimate happy place and this whole experience has given us so much more appreciation for it.
We are actually in the process of trying to find another airbnb home! We have found a few little fixer uppers in Foley and are currently weighing our options and praying about it a ton. The plan is to purchase one and flip it so we can continue having a rental property. This in itself will be such an adventure and we cannot wait to share more.
Thanks so much for reading!
