Sometimes I feel like we wait for someone to give us permission to take care of ourselves or we wait until we get sick or something happens before we start to take better care of ourselves. Please take this post as your permission to spend more time taking care of YOU this season. The busyness of the season can really come crashing down on us if we allow it to and in the past I have been very guilty of this but our stress is always in our own hands. We are in control of our minds and we have the power to handle things in a calm and relaxed manner if that is what we want! The mind is an incredible thing and can be transformed and molded into new versions of itself in every and any stage of life. There are studies and books written on the healing ability of the mind and how some people have been healed from terminal illness, broken bodies, and damaged mental health with their thoughts and attitude alone. If the mind can tell the body that it no longer has a terminal illness, I’m pretty sure it can tell our body to chill and not be so stressed all the time. I am preaching to the choir right now because I can be one of the most high strung people I know if I let myself go there. I have suffered with anxiety & panic attacks in the past but have gotten to a point where I am able to calm my mind and my body before it ever gets to the point of an attack again. I have written quite a few blog posts on this subject and you can find those here!
So let’s get into the good stuff. All the ways we can show ourselves a little more love this season and really nourish our mental health when we need it the most. This year let’s get better at saying no to certain things if we know they will cost us our sanity which can in turn cost us our health. Let’s fill our cup up throughout this season so we can better and more genuinely fill others’ cups as well.
Things you can do to practice mindfulness and take care of yourself this fall & winter:
Start a yoga practice - I use YouTube videos or thrivingplantbased.com for an affordable and easy way to practice yoga from home!
Meditate daily - I use the simple habit app and LOVE it. This app has changed my mental health drastically. I now have an incredible tool to reach for and I am so thankful for it.
Get a massage!
Pray & spend time with God. This looks different for everyone so do what makes you feel the most connected.
Eat well. Eat your greens& all the fruits and veggies that make you feel good. Your body will thank you!
Take a bath or better yet, a CBD bath! CBD bath bombs can be found here!
Use essential oils. Lavender & Wild Orange are great ones to start with.
Spend 15-30 minutes in the sun whenever possible. Even if the sun isn’t out, get outside whenever you can!
Give yourself a break. Whether you’re self-employed or work for someone else, if you are given a break or if you decide to give yourself a break, ACTUALLY take that break. No matter how much we love our work, we all need a break from the hustle and I truly believe we are rewarded when we step away from work and take some time for ourselves.
Plan a winter getaway or future vacation
or take a staycation!
Drink Hot Tea - You can find some great organic medicinal teas in the new shop!
Bring in some nature. Plants have a way of bringing life into any space and also help purify the air. You’ll probably be spending a lot less time outdoors during the fall and winter so bringing some nature indoors is a great way to feel connected, grounded and calm.
Take vitamin D! We are SO depleted of vitamin D in the fall and winter and it is essential to our immune function & keeping the flu away!
Have some alone time. If you are the kind of person that needs alone time, take it! You will most likely be around so many people this season and sometimes it’s a lot to handle. Take some alone time if that’s how you recharge.
Spend an extra 10 minutes doing something for yourself while getting ready that you would’nt normally do, a quick face mask, really taking the time to moisturize, doing a facial steam, spending an extra 10 minutes in a hot shower taking some deep breaths, etc.
Plan a spa day!
Paint. Painting for fun can be so therapeutic. Watercolor is my favorite!
Watch a funny movie. Laughter is good for the soul.
Ask for help - if you are overwhelmed or have too much on your plate, ask for help! Those who love you will be happy to help, we just need to get better at asking for it.
Keep your space clean & tidy - A clean space helps the mind feel balanced and calm.
Read a book just for fun
Listen to positive podcasts.
Start a gratefulness journal - journaling is something I’m trying to do more of. I love this 5 minute journal.
Prioritize and don’t let your list get too long. Trust me, I understand having a long to-do list, especially during the holidays! But a long to do list can easily make you feel like you’re drowning. Narrow it down. Pick three of the most important things that will feel awesome to get accomplished that day. Prioritize those 3 things and save the rest for tomorrow OR delegate and get some help! There is NOTHING wrong with asking for help. We’re better together. :)
Love on loved ones. Give hugs, laugh, cry, enjoy your time with family and friends and cherish it. These are the moments that matter.
